Hello VSCers,
I am attempting to create a site where camp friends of yesteryear can re-connect. Did you go to Vineyard Sailing Camp on Lagoon Pond? If so, when? What unit were you in? Who were your friends? Do you remember your counselors? Do you remember any camp songs? Are you still sailing today? What is your favorite memory?
As I'm sure you know, sadly VSC closed its doors for good in 1981 after Patriots Trail Girls Scouts made the decision to sell the property. It was sold to the Town of Oak Bluffs, and they haven't changed it much. While the tent platforms and all of the out-buildings have been removed, the Mainstay is still there, and is used by the town for all sorts of functions. And, they run a community sailing program from the beach on the Lagoon.
The spirit of VSC is still alive today in the hundreds of campers and counselors who remember their days sailing on the lagoon, taking "tippy" tests, tying a bowline, singing around the campfire, biking to Edgartown, canoeing to Portside, or getting their annual hashmark. I'd love to get this blog going, and see how many "alumni" we can find. I look forward to hearing from you. Please pass this URL along to any and all former VSCers.

You can add Cynnie Erho as director in 71 and 72, my firt two years at VSC.

It is so much fun to rewind the memory tape and recall the names and faces of fellow VSCers. Of course, I am sure that we all look even more fabulous now than we did then (although we were all stylin' in those navy blue kneesocks!). I'm thrilled that Rapple (who else?) has started this, and think that a Summer 2008 VSC reunion should be in the works. I volunteer to help track people down and plan, and welcome any and all leads!
Is anyone still in touch with Ducky or Sue Brubaker?
It would be great to track down as many people as possible and have a PARTY...I know Di Campbell's (Hamblen)e-mail and will fill her in too...

hey guys...I think about you all...having even been talling people at work about the whole thing (they think I'm nuts but that's nothing new). We had something special and we still ahve it, look at all the ways we.ve passed it to our kids. My older ones have their own boat!!!! Molly (11) LOVES to go to sleep with seal lullaby.....
THis is great. I was a camper from 1973 to 1977 then a CIT in 78 and 79. I lived to spend my summers at VSC. I have been looking for such folks as Sandy Magliozzi and Margie Adler.

I am Sue Addiss. I was a camper at VSC for 7 years. Also a CIT. This website is a great idea but it seems to have died out aver tha past year. Can I do anything to help?

Wow, Rapple, I have such a clear memory of you! You knew me as "Hoppi" back then. I was a counselor at VSC from '64 - '78 with a few years away in the early to mid '70's -- can't remember exactly.

Hi Sue! I think I remember you. In fact I have a few pictures of that summer that I should send you to post! I was there the summer of '81as a lifeguard/swim instructor. I went to the camp in the summer of '74 I believe! I reconnected recently on Facebook with Birgitte Holt Anderson; she was the swim instructor from Denmark that was there that year! What a kick. I live in Portland, Oregon now and sail off of Vancouver, BC. Great sailing out here. How should I send you these photos? Thanks, Ellen
Molly (Glidden) Dora here. LOVE LOVE LOVE VSC and my memories of it. Singing, sailing, swimming. Best memories of my youth were spent there. Linger, Circle Game, Piney Wood Hills - I still sing today. I wish my daughter (10) could attend VSC as I knew it - so special. I remember the silly counselors 'pantsing' each other. Must have been there '79-'81. Still feel the loss. No other camp compared to VSC. Living in Vermont now and have a Sunfish.
Oh yeah, I forgot, in '81 I got appendicitis 2-3 days into my first session! That's memorable, too. Spent time at the M.V. Hospital and got great TLC from the nurses' there. I have since become a nurse myself and can only hope that I'm as consoling (and fun) to my patients as those nurses were to me.

I was a camper, CIT and sailing instructor from 1967-1970. You were a big influence on me. I live in Maine in the summer/fall and have been sailing in the Caribbean for the past seven winters with my husband. Where are you living? Maggie Salter
